Prayers Work!

In the Bible’s book of Jonah, we can read how God sent Jonah to the great city of Nineveh to announce a shocking message. Jonah walked through this big city proclaiming: “Forty days more and Nineveh will be destroyed.” The people of Nineveh believed God, and all of them started fasting and doing penance, as a sign of repentance for their evil deeds. God then had mercy on them and Nineveh wasn’t destroyed.

Something alike happened this month in Argentina, which has to do with life, and with your prayers, too. Last June, that Country’s lower chamber passed a bill to legalize abortion. Even when there are a variety of ideologies around, for most Argentinians this devastating news meant “Some days more and baby’s life in Argentina will be destroyed.”

In everybody’s calendar there was a bloody yet hopeful date marked: August 8th. That day the upper chamber would decide whether they would approve or reject the bill already approved by the lower camera. As the Ninevites, also the people of Argentina started offering to God prayers, fasting and sacrifices, claiming day at night with all their strength, and awaiting a miracle from Heaven, knowing the odds of international pressure were against life. They were counting also on the prayers and support of fellows from many different Countries.

The day arrived, and once more… God had mercy! After an exhausting 16-hours long debate, the Senators casted their votes: 31 approved abortion, 38 defended both lives, mother and child! It was an historical and joyful day in Argentina, and it marked an antecedent for other Latin America Countries which are facing the same challenge nowadays. The battles will continue, but with invigorated strength. Miracles do happen! Your prayers work!
